Steep Ravine Camping – My Favorite Campsite in California???
Last weekend I took a trip to the coast, North Bay Area, following a short work stop for Curtis in the bay area …Did you know the California regional forest service office is located on a strange abandoned navel island? Neither did we… Anyhow, it was an extended weekend of wet camping, wet backpacking, and then ‘I can’t bear to be wet at a KOA next to a dozen screaming kids…
Winter Camping Tips from Michigan’s Most Remote State Park – Craig Lake
I got off the phone a little while ago with my friend Jacquie – one friend from the group of Michigan Tech friends I do a yearly summer trip with – discussing possible plans & how I could maybe merge running a marathon into a grand summer trip? I am excited and hopeful that everything may yet fall into place, but then again if it doesn’t it wouldn’t be our…
Backpacking Buena Vista Lake to Quartz Mountain Trailhead – Day 3 Buena Vista Loop
There is something very strange about waking up in the morning without having any idea what time it is, nor anyone to judge your own sleeping habits against. I had forgotten my analog watch, which was alright since I had my GPS and cell phone for the time, but not very convenient. On day three I woke up somewhat before sunrise (it was getting light out though) and I was…
Backpacking Johnson Lake to Buena Vista Lake – Day 2 Buena Vista Loop
Have you heard about how Yosemite has to kick people out of the park starting today because of the government shutdown? Word is that with the government shutdown the roads through Yosemite to accommodate through traffic, but with a big No Recreating clause. What puts the cherry on top of the whole situation is that Google decided today to post a “Happy Birthday Yosemite” doodle. Personally I think this is great…
Backpacking Quartz Mountain Trailhead to Johnson Lake – Day 1 Buena Vista Loop
Between the Rim fire and other commitments I have not been able to spend too much time hiking with my favorite hiking partner, and boyfriend, Curtis. This past month Curtis has been been working on creating a models and maps for the burned areas of the Stanislaus, with a side gig of representing soil scientists everywhere in the A.P., San Jose Mercury and L.A. Times. Which is cool and all, but…
Backpacking Cathedral Lake, Tahoe Desolation Wilderness and up to Mt Tallac
Why do I go backpacking? I go backpacking because I want to get away, to feel the air in my lungs and the burn in my legs, to connect with my hiking partners, to find something new and different, to explore, and (of course) to visit some very beautiful places. But backpacking is nothing if not practical – carrying everything one needs all in one backpack – and sometimes what…
Big Trees Camping and North Grove Hike
Guess who had a birthday recently? This girl! It was hard to compete with last year’s birthday – in which I both completed my first half marathon (& only so far… I should fix that!) and had a fantastic Easter Sunday – but birthdays are not supposed to be a competition. If they were a competition then I would have stalled out after that time in which Jacquie made me that realistic…
Camping Andrew Molera State Park in Big Sur
I’m not going to lie, whenever I am car camping anywhere new I worry about not finding space to camp. A pretty justified fear thanks to past experiences, like the time we reserved a campsite at Butano State Park and someone still tried to take our spot. I mean the people who we ended up sharing the spot with had assumed they could find a spot, and then they couldn’t –…
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Camping & Hiking McWay Falls
Tourist season is almost upon us again up in Groveland – slowly the local businesses are livening up, we are beginning to see a steady flow of traffic Yosemite, and I can hear the PML golfers outside teeing more and more often. These changes made me realize that if I wanted to go to any traditional popular tourist locations I had better get moving now, or face the higher prices and thicker crowds that true summer tourist season demands. Impetus enough for Curtis & I to make our (moderately spontaneous?) trip to Big Sur this weekend!
