5 Wildfire Lessons Learned from Evacuating California's Rim Fire and Backpacking Nearby

The Rim Fire from Groveland

Sep 2, ’13 · by Denise · in At home

In case you have not heard, the big news around Groveland & this stretch of of the Sierra recently has been the Rim Fire, currently at 228,680 acres & the 4th largest wildfire in California history. Curtis, I, and our pets (Basil and Herman) are now back at home and safe, but it was an adventure getting here! We survived home evacuations, road closures, visitors, and backpacking trips during this chaotic…

God's Bath at the Clavey River

Hiking the Wild and Scenic Clavey River to God’s Bath

Aug 6, ’13 · by Denise · in On Adventures

2015 Summer Update: Many of the parts of the Stanislaus National Forest that were closed to the public last summer because of Rim Fire dangers are now open again. Please use your common sense when attempting this or any trail – don’t go if there is a sign that says no access/closed/etc (yes, even if someone knocked it down or moved it out of the road). Check in online to see if there are any alerts…

Big Creek Trail, the Flattest Trail in Groveland

Big Creek Trail, the Flattest Trail in Groveland

May 15, ’13 · by Denise · in On Adventures

I am training to run my second half marathon! Hopefully in another 8-ish weeks time I will be blazing through the Davis Moo-nlight half marathon like a pro. Alternatively you might find me limping past the finish line in the horrible central valley heat . Either way, I am pretty excited for the glow in the dark medals you receive for finishing. Plus, it is convenient before Curtis & I’s busiest backpacking months (so hopefully we can avoid injury from over-training/hiking?). Currently…

Groveland California Hiking with Tuolumne Views

Stanislaus National Forest Hiking: Groveland Dog Walking Along the Tuolumne

Mar 8, ’13 · by Denise · in On Adventures

Note that areas located within the 2013 Rim fire, including this location, are not accessible for safety reasons until Forest Service employees note otherwise. There is obvious signage in this area to indicate closures. Please follow all rules and use your common sense as always when entering into public lands. Hiking in the Groveland Ranger District of the Stanislaus National Forest is not really a thing. Nobody around here does it that much when Yosemite is so close. Plus, those darn low elevation national forests are…

Halloween 2011

Halloween 2011

Our Original Halloween Plans: Attend the Jam-music-fest Hangtown Halloween Ball in Placerville as 1 MC Hammer and coordinating Hammerhead Shark. But when it comes down to it, who wants to make a hammer head shark costume and pay mucho $$$ to see music? Exspecialy when you know our new cat Herman will be intent on trying to make you stab him with the needle and thread you meant to make…

For now, we have crappy phone pictures of sweet velvet space paintings

Jun 21, ’10 · by Denise · in At home

Someday, Curtis and I will post pictures from our trip to Yosemite. For now, we have crappy phone pictures of sweet velvet space paintings in notable Groveland Antique stores! Adding to that list of something, as soon as I figure out how, and why, my camera SD card has a virus, and as soon as we shelves to finish un-packing, I will post photos of the new place. If you are so curious, we have…

Lovelock, NV to Groveland, CA: The Finale of Our Roadtrip!

May 31, ’10 · by Denise · in On Adventures

The finale is a bit of an overstatement. It was more like a great pleasure to get out of California Lake Tahoe Memorial Day traffic and find our hotel that basil took an instant liking to. Meaning he wanted to chew all the antique furniture, of course (We bunny proofed!). Leaving Lovelock, NV we put our lovers lock on the chain in the town that replicates an ancient Chinese tradition of people putting…
